K-pop idol turned K-drama star Bae Suzy: 5 things about the Nations First Love as she stars

K-drama actor Joo Won returns to the screen – 5 things to know

The show paints a portrait of South Korea’s booming tech industry, with Suzy playing Seo Dal-mi, an aspiring businesswoman who dreams of becoming Korea’s Steve Jobs.

But aside from her musical and acting prowess, what else do we know about Suzy? Here are five things you need to know about her before you settle in to watch Start-Up.

She was dubbed one of the ‘Nation’s First Loves’

So-called because they are seen as the epitome of a first crush – cute, innocent and girl next door-y – South Korean actresses who earn this nickname are few and far between. Aside from Suzy, Jun Ji-hyun, Son Ye-jin, and Lee Yeon-hee have been dubbed as such, but many believe Suzy to be the true Nation’s First Love.

However, while promoting her second mini album “Faces of Love” in 2018, Suzy admitted she wasn’t a huge fan of the moniker. She said she was thankful, but felt it was something of a burden: “I thought, ‘That isn’t the only image I have’”, she explained in interviews with Korean media, saying she worried people would be disappointed if she played up the image, preferring to show her fans a more diverse and honest version of herself.

She’s highly skilled at endorsements, and has been branded a ‘CF Queen’

She’s been called a “CF Queen,” (Commercial Film Queen), aka “endorsement royalty” for her ability to sell a range of products from food and beverages to clothing and cameras. In 2013, she earned more than 10 billion won (US$8.7 million) and bagged over 14 endorsement deals. She commands US$540,000 per endorsement, similar to the rates of Yoona and top actresses Jun Ji-hyun and Song Hye-kyo. Her biggest endorsements so far this year include Lancôme and Guess.

She was the youngest member of K-pop girl band Miss A

She debuted in K-pop group Miss A at age 15, making her the youngest among her co-artists. According to English language K-pop website Soompi, she only trained for 10 months before she was introduced as a K-pop idol.

Her acting debut in Dream High earned her awards

The music teen drama propelled Suzy to stardom and even managed to outpace her singing career. In 2011, at just 16, Suzy was bagging accolades for her role. She won Best Newcomer Actress and Best Couple Award at the KBS Drama Awards with Kim Soo-hyun.

She’s not afraid to open up about her mental health

Suzy has been open about her mental health in a bid to demonstrate that fame isn’t everything. In an episode of talk show Healing Camp in 2013, she revealed why she cried a press conference earlier that year. “I could bear physical exhaustion but I couldn’t express the scars I received from people,” she was quoted on Soompi. She bottled her emotions, “and it just exploded,” she added. She also openly wondered if she could endure the industry’s often punishing schedules and go through all of it again.
